So, let’s talk about Rage Quitting —You’ve thought about it, right?

Several years ago, you would have found me in a cubicle, freezing under fluorescent bulbs, staring at the motivational quote stuck to my wall, living paycheck to paycheck, barely making enough money to cover daycare and rent, commuting 1.5 hours each way to work, and crying in the car, exhausted from fake smiling all day. 

I struggled with hating my job yet not knowing what I actually wanted to do instead, with no clue and nowhere to turn for answers.

It didn’t take me long to see that I needed to figure this shit out and take things into my own hands

  • I started researching professional development and leadership

  • I set up informational interviews to learn about different jobs and parts of the company

  • I went to networking events, joined professional affiliations, found a mentor

  • I started advocating for myself at work and pushing myself to be more visible

Through experimentation, smiling through discomfort, and many, many self-pep talks, I started to connect the dots and figure out exactly what I wanted my career to look like. 


I realized I’d been telling myself a story that Big Corporations were the best places to work.

I wanted more autonomy in my day, and more money, but that seemed like a combination you only find in Hallmark movies.

Knowing this much catalyzed a different way of thinking and a different way of planning that changed everything.

I started to look beyond the options I knew, researching different company cultures and dynamics, because through the soul searching I discovered I actually liked my job… just not my workplace.

As I got more clarity on what type of manager I needed, what work environment I thrived in, and, the really BIG QUESTION of who I am—I went for it.

I applied to companies I’d never heard of that fit my new parameters and I discovered that a company size of around 250 was my sweet-spot.

Meanwhile, I started asking to be in meetings I wasn’t invited to, and requesting stretch-assignments that would help me develop different skills.

I was plotting my exit. 

And when I did find a great company, with a positive culture, more flexibility and higher pay, I climbed the ladder like a champ. I successfully designed my career on my terms. I didn’t dread Monday mornings anymore…

… And then COVID hit.

“The Great Pause” made me question if this career I’d been chasing was what I really wanted, and it turned out, my wants and needs had shifted again. My work involved hiring a lot of independent contractors and entrepreneurs, and I saw how much money they made and how much flexibility they had… and I realized I wanted that for myself.
